How many anime have been produced in Japan? It's a difficult question because of the existence of Original Anime Videos released in several connected episodes, making them true miniseries, so there are two main counting methods. For example Video Girl Ai series (six connected episodes released individually) can be counted as though it was one title or six different titles. This is a very simple case of well connected episodes, but there are many OAV series where connection between single episodes is very ambiguous. In Anime check-list I have used both methods: I have included all single episodes released individually, according the method used by Baricordi et al (1991), so you can search each ones by date; I also have listed together all connected episodes, according the method used by Clements and McCarthy (2001).
- Tv specials and Movies are always counted individually.
- Television series are always counted like one title, unless they have several official series (for example Dragonball, Dragonball Z and Dragonball GT are three different series, so they are counted as three different titles)
